Every now and then we come across a high quality campervan that’s just slightly different…that breaks from the mould and doesn’t follow the VW path but makes its own impression and statement. On this occasion it’s the Superb Toyota Ashover from the renowned converters….Hillside Leisure.

At just 4.8m long, it’s slightly shorter than your standard Volkswagen. It will therefore fit in the majority of parking bays that you come across and provides great manoeuvrability thanks to its shorter wheelbase.

It’s a decent drive too, with a rear-wheel-drive chassis and a throatier diesel engine than VW alternatives as well as a floor-mounted gearstick; it is responsive in traffic and has car-like drive and acceleration through the gears on the open road.

The layout is a classic 2 berth model by Hillside Leisure featuring a generous “rock & roll rear” bed with 2 forward facing belted captain seats, rotating passenger seat and a Remio “pop top” roof that gives it a flush, sleek profile with the roof down.

The well-proportioned side kitchen consists of a Dometic/Smev stainless steel sink, Smev 2 burner gas hob combo with glass hinged lids. A nice feature here is that any spills from the hob simply drain into the integrated sink. Dometic/waeco 12v compressor fridge and plenty of clever storage areas. Storage areas are even built into the rear seat/bed.

The “pop up” roof delivers more than enough head space and can double up as a further roof bed (making use of the infill boards) or can be used as a storage area when parked up using a combination of 1, 2 or 3 boards as required.

This really is a lovely example of the Ashover model, with Metallic Silver paint, Alloy wheels and a modern light cream interior, it offers a true alternative to the front wheel drive Volkswagen.
